Summer Wandering

I haven’t been writing much of anything here lately.

Yes, that much is obvious.

But I have a good reason! Pants and I did a little summer traveling. No, we didn’t go anywhere very beachy or exotic, but it’s still nice to get away from the usual routine. We were in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia (where I hail from!) for just over a week. We drove there and back, and the weather was lovely. We took a short dip in the river near the Quebec/New Brunswick border and felt rejuvenated. We ate lots of fried things, which seems to be the norm when we visit NS. We spent lots of time at the shore, which helps see me through our landlocked existence here in Montreal. I love the shore. Watching the waves, I feel simultaneously calm and excited. It feels like going back to my childhood, but not in a way that’s nostalgic– I just gaze at it, and think “okay”.

We also spent five days in Kingston, Ontario, which is where Pants hails from. His mom cooks really well and his dad is currently vegan, so we were able to eat nice, healthy foods and clean all that fried stuff out of our systems. We also got to swim in a gorgeous lake, and took a daytrip to Ithaca, New York, to visit Pants’ sister, brother-in-law and beautiful new niece!

Then we were home in Montreal for a week. During that time I was busy preparing exams for two classes I was teaching, which are now finally marked! Yay for me! And then this past weekend we went to Ottawa to visit my brother, who is there for the summer doing a work co-op. I hadn’t visited Ottawa since I was about fourteen, and was impressed with how clean it is, how nice most signs are there (seriously… lots of old-style painted signs with beautiful lettering) and how green the city is. The downside of all that green space is that the city is really spread out. We walked a lot. Which I love. But still, my feet and shins hurt by the end of Saturday.

There was a super-cute fairy and lantern festival in Ottawa that we went to Saturday night. The above picture came from there. I might post a few more pictures from it later on. They had turned off all street lights in this park, and it was lit only by all these wonderful lanterns, most of them homemade. There were also faeries walking around and dancing. Well, humans with an affinity for faeries, anyway.

Now we’re home again, home again, jiggity-jig. I’m celebrating the beginning of a new August week in Montreal by eating trail mix (because it’s actually too humid to cook!) and drinking lukewarm green tea.

I hope you’re having a relaxing August, too!

^^ Meg
