In bloom, without a recipe

yes, that is a bicycle in the bedroom.

Our Christmas cactus is in bloom. It was really nice to wake up to sunlight and vibrant pink blooms by the bed this weekend. We inherited this cactus from some friends just a year ago, so this is the first time it has bloomed at our place. There are two flowers on it now, but there are seven more buds on it that will open soon.

I have been cooking today, but it’s nothing extraordinary and I won’t bore you with the details.
I have a bread recipe that I’ve been making a few times a week lately and am very pleased with, so will be sharing it soon. For today, though, I’ll share a tanka (translated into English) by Masaoki Shiki (1867-1902):

crowding night
weary with the work
of writing things
blew the fire to life
and drank some tea

This is more or less my plan for this evening, except I’ll likely be watching a movie instead of tending a fire. Drink tea, keep warm… wishing you well on this second week of our new year.

Where credit is due: Chris Rudmin took these lovely photos. Thanks, Chris!

Happy new year! Those flowers are a gorgeous colour! Sorry it took so long to get back to you about the foodbank… We meet once a week on Monday mornings and distribute food into boxes for 100+ families. It’s in west island (pierrefonds), around 10am.

Hi Sharon, Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately, the west island is really far from me (I live in Villeray, near Marche Jean-Talon) so I’ll have to look for something a bit closer to home. But again, thanks so much for the suggestion :)
