Chocolate and zucchini muffins, with lavender

Farewell, summer. We hardly knew ye.
This week we’ve had the sort of weather that encourages baking, at least among those partial to baked goods. I don’t know what this kind of weather encourages among those poor souls who have no interest in baked goods. Probably shopping for fall fashions, or taking hot baths.

This week the weather outside in the afternoon has been ideal for autumn. In the sun it’s nice and warm, but cold in the mornings and evenings–summer is decidedly over, despite the calendar insisting otherwise. So much so that I was cold in our apartment this week, especially in the mornings. I was looking for things to bake, just to warm up the kitchen! We finally put a second comforter on the bed, and I even had to close the kitchen window two days ago. (more…)

Earthly delights.

These are a few photos from one of my (almost weekly) trips to Montreal’s Botanical Gardens. It is one of my favorite places to read and drink thermos-tea in this city, especially during summer and fall. (more…)

Spring/summer/salad roll goodness!

cucumber, cilantro and squash. Note that they are resting on the prepared rice paper, but it hasn't been folded yet

cucumber, cilantro and squash: oh my!

These little beauties were modeled after the delicious Vietnamese salad roll, but they make no claims to authenticity: the ingredients used are somewhat unorthodox, but they suit me very well. We ate them two days in a row. The first day we used bean sprouts, carrot, cucumber, many herbs, shrimp and red pepper. The second day we used steamed sweet potato and squash as the main filler, supplemented with carrot, cucumber, herbs, and some had shrimp. C isn’t a big fan of shrimp, actually, so maybe half had shrimp in them.

The first batch featuring bean sprouts were good, but I vastly prefer the ones with sweet potato and squash–they were filling, the sweetness went nicely with the sauce (even if it wasn’t homemade), and with the many Vietnamese herbs we used. They were absolutely delicious. And easy–especially if you don’t prepare them beforehand. We just wrapped them up and ate them at the table, making just as many as we wanted. I recommend you try them. (more…)

Summer Drinks, or what to swill on a sweltering day

an iced tea drink, a window view

It’s no longer very hot here in Montreal: the week of summer we were blessed with this year has already passed us by. Nights are now cool and breezy, though afternoons are still warm-to-hot, provided the sun is out. This was a fizzy drink I made for myself a few times last week, during the height of the heat. Mine was pretty and refreshing, though not sweet. I’m not a great fan of sweet drinks. If you are, please add as much sweetener to this as you like, to suit your tastes. (more…)

Boricha, or summer’s last (& first) hurrah

ice-cold boricha, ahhh...

ice-cold boricha, ahhh...

It’s really hot here in Montreal today.
No big deal, it is summer, right?
I mean really hot. The sort of hot where everything looks hazy. And where I (who normally walk fairly quickly) am forced to walk as slowly as possible (especially while carrying groceries… I hate carrying things) just to keep from sweating through my clothes…ewww. (more…)

Summer Wandering

I haven’t been writing much of anything here lately.

Yes, that much is obvious.

But I have a good reason! Pants and I did a little summer traveling. No, we didn’t go anywhere very beachy or exotic, but it’s still nice to get away from the usual routine. We were in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia (where I hail from!) for just over a week. We drove there and back, and the weather was lovely. We took a short dip in the river near the Quebec/New Brunswick border and felt rejuvenated. We ate lots of fried things, which seems to be the norm when we visit NS. We spent lots of time at the shore, which helps see me through our landlocked existence here in Montreal. I love the shore. Watching the waves, I feel simultaneously calm and excited. It feels like going back to my childhood, but not in a way that’s nostalgic– I just gaze at it, and think “okay”.

We also spent five days in Kingston, Ontario, which is where Pants hails from. His mom cooks really well and his dad is currently vegan, so we were able to eat nice, healthy foods and clean all that fried stuff out of our systems. We also got to swim in a gorgeous lake, and took a daytrip to Ithaca, New York, to visit Pants’ sister, brother-in-law and beautiful new niece!

Gorge-ous in Ithaca!
