Boricha, or summer’s last (& first) hurrah

ice-cold boricha, ahhh...

ice-cold boricha, ahhh...

It’s really hot here in Montreal today.
No big deal, it is summer, right?
I mean really hot. The sort of hot where everything looks hazy. And where I (who normally walk fairly quickly) am forced to walk as slowly as possible (especially while carrying groceries… I hate carrying things) just to keep from sweating through my clothes…ewww. (more…)

New books and free tea

Disclaimer: this turned into a long, rambling post. If you’ve no interest in books, tea, or rambling… consider yourself warned.

Several weeks ago I ordered some tea from Hibiki-an, a tea producer in Japan. I have ordered tea from them several times before and am always happy with my order. This time, though, I misjudged how long the tea would take to arrive. It was in no way the fault of Hibiki-an, my tea always arrives promptly, but it caused me no small amount of stress, actually. I placed my order only four or five days before Pants and I were planning to leave for Nova Scotia. Generally it takes seven to twelve days for a package to arrive from Japan. (more…)

Summer Wandering

I haven’t been writing much of anything here lately.

Yes, that much is obvious.

But I have a good reason! Pants and I did a little summer traveling. No, we didn’t go anywhere very beachy or exotic, but it’s still nice to get away from the usual routine. We were in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia (where I hail from!) for just over a week. We drove there and back, and the weather was lovely. We took a short dip in the river near the Quebec/New Brunswick border and felt rejuvenated. We ate lots of fried things, which seems to be the norm when we visit NS. We spent lots of time at the shore, which helps see me through our landlocked existence here in Montreal. I love the shore. Watching the waves, I feel simultaneously calm and excited. It feels like going back to my childhood, but not in a way that’s nostalgic– I just gaze at it, and think “okay”.

We also spent five days in Kingston, Ontario, which is where Pants hails from. His mom cooks really well and his dad is currently vegan, so we were able to eat nice, healthy foods and clean all that fried stuff out of our systems. We also got to swim in a gorgeous lake, and took a daytrip to Ithaca, New York, to visit Pants’ sister, brother-in-law and beautiful new niece!

Caution Bear: consider yourself warned

dsc01811

This is a packaged snack/cookie thing I found recently in my local (Montreal) Vietnamese grocery store, Marche Oriental. The product itself is from Taiwan, from what I can gather, but I was told by a Japanese woman that it is a brand she recognizes from Japan. She said the bear is supposed to be the type that is found in Hokkaido.

Anyway, history aside, I bought this because I liked the package. It’s so… powerful? (more…)

It’s oh so quiet!

Hmmm… the possibilities of a blank page.

It is oh-so-quiet in here. I like it.

I think I’ll grab a cup of tea and stay awhile.

Welcome to my world– where libraries are edible, and food can be read.

If I were one to write a thesis, I would mention that I hope to use this space to give myself a place to write, and share that writing with others. I will focus my writing here on food and reading, two of my dearest loves.

Welcome, indeed.
