Last week I found some fuyu persimmons for a decent price at a grocery store near my apartment, so bought a bunch of them. They were still firm when I brought them home, but after a day or two they were going soft. I prefer fuyu persimmons when they are crisp, so I started making persimmon smoothies with the softer ones, for a change.

This smoothie was surprisingly good. It turned out to be very thick, I believe that this was due to the gelatin-like gummy substance that surrounds the seeds in some persimmons. The smoothie was sweet and fruity, and I thought the consistency was just perfect. It kept me full for several hours, giving me time to clean and cut vegetables for kimchi!

The colour isn't great, but it's still delicious.
Here is something else I’ve been using in smoothies lately:

Maca is highly nutritious, and is also an ‘adaptagen’, which roughly means that it can help us poor sinners adapt to the stresses of life. It goes well in this smoothie, but I don’t like it in smoothies with berries or most other fruits.
Persimmon-maca smoothie: one fuyu persimmon (slightly over-ripe works well) peeled and cut into pieces, one peeled banana, 1Tbsp. maca powder, 1 tsp powdered ginseng OR a bit of cinnamon, 1/2cup unsweetened almond milk (or other nut/seed/bean/ruminant milk). Put all ingredients into your blender, and blitz until the concoction is smooth and drinkable. Enjoy!

Smoothies, really? It’s December!
Sometimes if I’m cold I’ll put a little hot water into my smoothie so it doesn’t make me shiver. Brrr!
Keep warm.

Mmmm, I love persimmons! And I also prefer them when they are crisp. Just leaving a comment to say how excited I am to find a Montreal blogger! Discovered your blog today, and am looking forward to reading!
Hi Sharon, I’m glad you found me! It seems that fuyu season is wrapping up, and now I’m seeing the bigger hachiya persimmons everywhere.
Hi Meaghan,
I saw your comment on my Bride of God piece in Geist Magazine; so glad it made you laugh! Thanks for the nice words. Love your site. I’ve made a note to try a couple of things already. Can’t wait to try the persimmon smoothie (and I love the idea of turmeric tea!).
Hi Carin,
Thanks for visiting my site. I very much enjoyed your story and would love to read more of your writing.
Hi sweetie pie. Am I the only person on earth who thinks maca tastes like death? Maybe I need to get used to it or put it in the right things? *shudder*
Jennie!
I agree, it tastes/smells a little funky. Trying to cover the taste of it doesn’t work well, so I try to find things that it combines well with… so far I like it with a cocoa/coffee sub. smoothie, and with the persimmon in this one. Otherwise, I think it ruins the taste of fruit like strawberries or blueberries in a smoothie.
Interesting, thanks for that. My son has a terrible aversion to eating fruit , so I made the fruit into smoothies for him and then he loves it! I also found some great smoothie recipes here and thought I’d share – lots of other great ideas there.
